Manassas post of the American Legion, Post 114, known as the Paul W. Mitchell Jr. Post. Part of the Sixteenth District of the Department of Virginia. Chartered in 1946 after sixteen African American WWII veterans petitioned National Headquarters in 1945 because Jim Crow segregation barred them from the area's existing (white) Legion posts; renamed in 2002 for member Paul W. Mitchell Jr. Reported 38 members to the Department in June 2026. Members are wartime veterans who support fellow veterans and their families, run youth and Americanism programs, and take part in community service.
