Chincoteague post of the American Legion, Post 159. Part of the First District of the Department of Virginia. Chartered in 1933. Runs a public canteen out of its own post home with posted daily bar hours (closed only Sunday evenings and shortened on meeting nights), weekly pool and dart-cricket tournaments, and a Virginia Department of Veterans Services outreach visit every third Wednesday to help local veterans with benefits. The post rents its hall out. Reported 339 members to the Department in June 2026. Members are wartime veterans who support fellow veterans and their families, run youth and Americanism programs, and take part in community service.

Schedule: 2nd Tuesday of each month at 7:00 PM (general membership); also House & Entertainment meeting 1st Saturday 6:00 PM and Executive Committee 1st Tuesday 5:30-7:00 PM per the post's own site

How to join
Membership is open to veterans who served on active duty during a recognised war era and were honourably discharged, and to those still serving. Details are on the post website.
