Rural Retreat post of the American Legion, Post 229. Part of the Seventh District of the Department of Virginia. Incorporated with the Virginia State Corporation Commission in April 1980, the post keeps an active Facebook following (453) and describes its work as veterans' advocacy, youth development, and mental health support. Reported 67 members to the Department in June 2026. Members are wartime veterans who support fellow veterans and their families, run youth and Americanism programs, and take part in community service.

How to join
Membership is open to veterans who served on active duty during a recognised war era and were honourably discharged, and to those still serving. Contact the post by email for details.
