Alexandria post of the American Legion, Post 24. Part of the Seventeenth District of the Department of Virginia. Chartered in 1920. Headquartered in Gadsby's Tavern, which its own site calls 'the oldest Post home in The American Legion': members bought the complex in 1928 for $18,000 to save it from demolition, transferred it to the City of Alexandria in 1972 with perpetual-use rights, and the post holds an original 1808 Thomas Jefferson letter it is permitted to display four times a year. The post rents its hall out. Reported 1,030 members to the Department in June 2026. Members are wartime veterans who support fellow veterans and their families, run youth and Americanism programs, and take part in community service.
