Farmville post of the American Legion, Post 32. Part of the Fifth District of the Department of Virginia. Named for Pvt. John "Jack" Garland of the Farmville Guard Unit (Co. G, 116th Infantry, 29th Division), killed by shrapnel on Malbrouck Hill during the Meuse-Argonne offensive on Oct. 8, 1918; the post celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2019, dating its organization to Sept. 4, 1919, when the town shut down at 4 p.m. to honor returning servicemen. Reported 59 members to the Department in June 2026. Members are wartime veterans who support fellow veterans and their families, run youth and Americanism programs, and take part in community service.

How to join
Membership is open to veterans who served on active duty during a recognised war era and were honourably discharged, and to those still serving. Contact the post by email for details.
