Smithfield post of the American Legion, Post 49, known as the Dashiell-Barlow Post. Part of the Fourth District of the Department of Virginia. Originally the George F. Dashiell post, honoring a Smithfield World War I Army captain killed in action one day before the 1918 armistice; renamed Dashiell-Barlow in 2021 to add Joseph 'Gus' Barlow, a World War II Marine veteran and Dashiell's cousin who died in 2018. Reported 108 members to the Department in June 2026. Members are wartime veterans who support fellow veterans and their families, run youth and Americanism programs, and take part in community service.

How to join
Membership is open to veterans who served on active duty during a recognised war era and were honourably discharged, and to those still serving. Details are on the post website.
