Fredericksburg post of the American Legion, Post 55, known as the Bass-Bowen-Brittenham-Bundy-Franklin-Knox Post. Part of the Twelfth District of the Department of Virginia. Chartered in 1919. Named in part for Lt. Bass, a World War I veteran of the all-Black 93rd "Red Hand" Division who became one of the first Black physicians practicing in Fredericksburg (from 1905); the post absorbed the former Post 142 (Bass-Brittenham-Bundy) in 2008 and was rechartered under its current six-name dedication in 2012. The post rents its hall out. Reported 116 members to the Department in June 2026. Members are wartime veterans who support fellow veterans and their families, run youth and Americanism programs, and take part in community service.

How to join
Membership is open to veterans who served on active duty during a recognised war era and were honourably discharged, and to those still serving. Details are on the post website.
