American Legion Post 56

NorthamptonMilitaryFraternal

Cheriton post of the American Legion, Post 56, known as the Northampton Post. Part of the First District of the Department of Virginia. Chartered in 1922. The post's original Cape Charles building, a former Pennsylvania Railroad clubhouse that hosted high school dances and a WWII USO canteen, burned down in 1964 destroying all early post records; the current hall in Cheriton is a renovated former supermarket the post bought and rebuilt in 2006. The post rents its hall out. Reported 250 members to the Department in June 2026. Members are wartime veterans who support fellow veterans and their families, run youth and Americanism programs, and take part in community service.
