Martinsville post of the American Legion, Post 78, known as the Homer Dillard Post. Part of the Sixth District of the Department of Virginia. Chartered in 1931 by a group of WWI Black veterans who had been denied membership in Martinsville's existing American Legion post because of their race; the post now holds a burial lot in Fairhaven Cemetery, marked by a monument, reserved for veterans without surviving kin. Reported 158 members to the Department in June 2026. Members are wartime veterans who support fellow veterans and their families, run youth and Americanism programs, and take part in community service.
