American Legion Post 79

South Hill post of the American Legion, Post 79. Part of the Fifth District of the Department of Virginia. The South Hill Legion was first organized in 1924 as Edward A. Epperson Post 20, lost its charter in 1927 amid declining membership, and was rechartered in December 1929 as Crews-Epperson-Puryear Post 79, named for three local WWI dead: Eddie Baptiste Crews, Edward Anderson Epperson, and Wilton Sterling Puryear. Facebook categorizes the venue as a 'Bingo Hall' and 'Veteran's Recreational Facility,' and it fields a South Hill youth team in the 2025 American Legion Baseball program. Reported 303 members to the Department in June 2026. Members are wartime veterans who support fellow veterans and their families, run youth and Americanism programs, and take part in community service.
