American Legion Post 83

Cobbs Creek post of the American Legion, Post 83, known as the Mathews Post. Part of the Third District of the Department of Virginia. Chartered in 1919. Its Hookemfair Road hall was the old Hookemfair General Store, Post Office and polling place, purchased in 1969 and rebuilt in part with WWII barracks materials salvaged from nearby Fort Eustis before the post moved in in 1974; it has run a 'World Famous Community Breakfast' fundraiser on the first Sunday of every month since 1986. Reported 94 members to the Department in June 2026. Members are wartime veterans who support fellow veterans and their families, run youth and Americanism programs, and take part in community service.
